It follows an agreement from the HSE and the NAS to utilise the facility at Roscommon University Hospital to ease overcrowding in surrounding hospitals.
Ambulances operating in the midlands and north Galway catchment area will be diverted to the Roscommon medical assessment unit form Monday,
It comes after a similar initiative was introduced last week when ambulances in the Midwest brought patients directly to Ennis Hospital instead of them waiting on a trolley at University Hospital Limerick.
The move was introduced as part of plans to ease record breaking overcrowding at UHL’s emergency department.
