It's believed the new variant is more transmissible than previous strains and has been detected in Ireland.
Between the 31st of July and August 5th were 644 new confirmed cases reported - with 35 people testing positive in the midlands.
16 cases were in Westmeath, with 15 in Offaly and four in Laois.
As of last Sunday, there was 769 million confirmed cases and over 6.9 million deaths globally.
