Westmeath Business Loses Week’s Takings After 3 Day Water Outage

Ms Ryan says she has made numerous phone calls to resolve the issue

A Westmeath business has lost up to 80 percent of this week's takings after having no water for three days.

Donna Ryan, who runs a laundry services in Athlone, says Irish Water informed her that water would be cut off on Wednesday between 9am and 5pm.

But, it was stopped on Tuesday and only returned yesterday evening.

Irish Water is carrying out work today to identify where leaks are coming from.

Ms Ryan says she has made numerous phone calls to resolve the issue - and while she says she's been given an apology but wasn't offered compensation:

Statement From Irish Water

“Irish Water are carrying out works on Castlemain Street to place a district meter under the Find and Fix Programme. There is one complete lane closure and access provided on the other lane. On completion of the meter, leak repair works will take place throughout Athlone Town, but will be of minimal impact. The works are due to take place until Friday, September 13th.

“GMC engineers, on behalf of Irish Water, called into all affected businesses last week to notify them of planned works. All known customers effected by the planned water disruption received a 2 day notice for a planned disruption on Wednesday, and the information was published on the Irish Water website.

“Irish Water regrets any inconvenience while these essential works are carried out. Irish Water has liaised with the business affected by this outage, and provided alternative water supplies until supply was restored yesterday evening.”
