There are 15 registered derelict sites in the county.
Offaly County Council says it's in the process of implementing a new strategy to deal with dereliction.
The issue has been labelled as the "bane in every politician's life" by Independent Councillor John Leahy, as figures show there's almost €2 million worth of derelict sites in the county.
There are 10 derelict buildings registered in Tullamore alone, with 15 in Offaly in total - the majority of those have been lying vacant for over a decade.
The local authority says it's aiming to encourage owners of vacant sites to activate their properties by investing in refurbishment or to sell on the open market.
In a statement to Midlands 103, Offaly County Council says:
"New resources are in place to tackle dereliction within the County, this is an ongoing process in which its objective is to reduce the number of derelict sites in the county. Offaly County Council are currently implementing a policy detailing how derelict sites will be managed within the county, this policy was formulated earlier this year and adopted by the Elected Members.
In line with current Government guidelines, engagement is ongoing with owners of derelict properties on the register and engagement (where possible) is ongoing with newly identified properties. The Council’s view is to encourage owners of derelict sites to activate their properties by investing in refurbishment and / or to sell on the open market."
